Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is a province in Isan renowned for its natural beauty and sugar production, the northeastern region of Thailand dominated by agriculture. Isan is both the largest and the poorest region in Thailand constituting one third of the country’s population and contributing just ten percent to the national GDP.

Most of Thailand’s rural poor live in Isan and increasingly young workers are migrating to seek opportunities elsewhere in the country, such as the capital Bangkok. Comparatively low standards of health and education infrastructure, poor wages and few employment opportunities within the province are challenging for children and young people to navigate.
